Times have changed, and Intel has now introduced the 3rd generation Intel Core processors that feature a better manufacturing process (22nm), faster architecture and improved integrated graphics which all in all results in about a 20% performance gain compared to previous generation processors. Now we’re sure everyone would be looking for cheap 3rd generation Intel Core i5 laptops. That’s because amongst the range of Intel Core processors, Core i5 hits the sweet spot in terms of price vs. performance. While offering value for money, it offers great performance as well and is thus the mainstream processor range, both in mobile and desktop versions. Needless to say, laptops with Intel Core i5 processors are a good bet for multimedia users and to some extent, gamers. So we’re going to tell you the top 5 3rd generation Intel Core i5 laptops under Rs. 40,000. That’s a price point most people would be looking for. However, because these processors perform better, they’re priced slightly higher on average and at this price point, most laptops come without operating systems. It’s the priciest amongst the cheap 3rd generation Intel Core i5 laptops mentioned here, but hey, Dell’s aren’t really known for their low pricing. But the price isn’t for nothing, it’s the only laptop on our list with 4 USB 3.0 ports and claims the highest battery backup of 6 hours. The audio is handled by Waves Maxx Audio 3.0. However, the camera is 1.3 MP and would be a good choice for people who love video calling and conferencing. It also comes with Dolby Digital Sound, the only downside is, battery backup is a bit low at 4.5 hours. Although, the price is pretty awesome, here’s the important stuff:

It includes a 1 GB AMD Radeon HD 7670M, which is a pretty good card if you plan on playing games. Considering this laptop is quite enough to play modern games, I’d say the price is justified. Furthermore, it has the best speakers among the lot and is the only one with the Intel HM77 Express chipset. The integrated Altec Lansing speakers sound great and the laptop body is pretty solid too. Cons are, it has just 2 USB 3.0 ports and 1 USB 2.0 port and the battery life isn’t much too write about at just 3.5 hours or so. Nevertheless, it’s a great offering for the price, here’s the specs:

Personally I think the Samsung is better since it includes OS (which lets you upgrade to Windows 8 Pro for Rs. 699), 1 TB HDD and good battery backup as well.

The card performance cannot be decided by memory alone, it’s the chipset that matters. For the most part, ultrabooks aren’t meant for gaming. Yes, Acer is a good company.

If you buy one it most probably will be packed, when they take it out make sure to look for any body scratches, check the screen, speakers and carry a USB drive to check that all ports are working fine. There’s a very small chance anything would be faulty, but you can make sure this way.

Yes you can save some money if you go for a laptop without Windows, but it’s better to get an OS. If you buy a laptop now you also get an upgrade to Windows 8 Pro for Rs. 699 which is a good deal. These 3rd generation Core i5 laptops come only with integrated graphics cards which aren’t too good for playing games. If you can increase your budget by around 5000 you can get a decent graphics card with the same processor. However, you can get a laptop with a 2nd generation Core i5 processor and graphics card for much less.

Yep it’s pretty easy, just get a Windows 7 installation disc, boot from it and follow instructions.
Thanks. I had bought a brand new Windows 7 to install on my desktop a couple of months ago. After installing and using the desktop for a couple of months, the motherboard in the desktop has got corrupted and the PC repair guy at Staples tells me that it is difficult to find a similar mother board. Now, I cannot turn the desktop on and uninstall the Win 7 operating system. I feel bad that I purchased a brand new OS which cannot be used now. Is there way or workaround for this problem? Can I use the Win 7 software on DOS laptop?
Why don’t you just get a new motherboard? They aren’t very expensive. And yes, you can install Windows 7 on any computer with the minimum specifications.

Ask around and find out if the retailer is trustworthy, if the laptop is indeed sealed and brand new, you shouldn’t have any problems.

The Intel processors are better at CPU related tasks like rendering or encoding, but they have a weak GPU. The AMD ones are inferior at CPU tasks but come with a stronger integrated GPU. For gaming and media related applications, you’re better off with the AMD since it has a better GPU. For CPU intensive tasks get the Intel. Hello, as by the given options above, between Acer & Samsung laptop, in comparison, which one I should go for, ’cause for the 750 HDD factor I’d like to go for Samsung but, with the given specs, there is one thing mentioned that it makes a few compromises with, like the USB 3.0, about the webcam, I can deal with that, as for the USB, as for the 2.0 version, what does it really lacks, what’s the drawbacks of not having it for it to be a 3.0 USB, does it have any connectivity problem or so, does it drag down the whole deal ?

Well it depends on what you need. If you have or are planning to buy USB 3.0 devices like external hard disks and want the highest transfer speeds, get the one with the USB 3.0 port. If you don’t mind slower transfer speeds but want more storage space, go for the Samsung.

Sure, you see the AMD APU’s are a good buy if you’re on a budget, and I usually suggest them because the integrated graphics are far superior to the integrated ones on Intel’s offerings. However, in terms of processor capability, Core i5’s are more powerful. But now if you can afford an i5 with the AMD Radeon 7670M card on that laptop, go for it. Don’t worry about the other laptop having a 2 GB graphics card, at the resolutions the laptop is capable of displaying you’re never going to need that much texture memory in games.

The Sony and HP are good buys. The upside for Sony is good build quality, good service, better camera and Windows 8 preinstalled. The HP is cheaper, has better battery life, a better screen, better graphics card but comes with Windows 7.

If we’re looking at the same i5 on both ProBook and Pavilion, performance will be pretty much the same. It’s just that ProBook is more suited for business, comes with different software and is slightly demure compared to Pavilion which is entertainment focused.

What are other branded laptops of i3/i5 which gives long battery back up (e.g. 6-8 hours or more)..?? Among the laptops, SAMSUNG laptops seem to give longer battery back up. Give some modals of SAMSUNG laptops along with their pros and cons. Some says SAMSUNG are new and concentrate on HP laptop. But considering the battery back up, i like any branded one which gives longer battery back up. Your reply is awaited. THANKS.
You can’t expect more than 4-5 hours of battery backup from laptops of that range mate.
