How To Transfer Files Between Your PC and Android Device Without A Router
So you’ve got an Android device and want to access files on your PC/laptop or vice versa, but are on the move or just don’t have a WiFi network available. It’s not hopeless, you can still access files and transfer them without the wireless network, all you need is a couple of free apps to do it! Of course, if you want to do the same with a PC, it has to have wireless capability, in the form of a WiFi adapter, which are thankfully not too expensive (check out our list of the top 3 WiFi adapters under Rs. 1000). Transfer Files Between your PC/Laptop and Android Device Without a Router
Before you go about with all the transferring, here’s what you’ll need:
- PC with WiFi adapter (or) Laptop
- An Android device
- A software that turns your PC/laptop into a hotspot, like Connectify (or) WiFi Hotspot Creator (or) Virtual Router Plus (or) mHotSpot
- Samba Filesharing for Android App
- AndSMB app
For accessing files on your Android device from your PC
Step 1 – Download and install any one of the software mentioned above, and create a WiFi hotspot, keep the username and password in mind.
Step 2 – On your Android device, connect to this created access point via the credentials made in the above step.
Step 3 – Download and install Samba Filesharing from the Google Play Store. Run it, set a username and password and note it down.
Step 4 – You will see an IP address displayed, enter this address in your Windows Explorer address bar in this format \\192.168.0.XX. Enter the username and password you set in the Samba Filesharing app, and you can access all files from there. Alternatively, you can also use AirDroid to do the same with a swankier interface, but it requires both your PC/laptop and Android device to be connected to the same WiFi network and thus requires a router.

Step 4 – Now, run it and add a new SMB server via the “Add” option with the same credentials you see in Samba Filesharing, except replace the last digit of the IP address with 1, for example, 192.168.0.XX.1. It should ask you for login credentials, enter the username and password you’ve set in Samba Filesharing.
Step 5 – Access all your PC files via the Device File Browser, or your Android device files via the SMB File Browser.
